Selecting Keywords

Keywords are the unsung heroes of websites. Keywords are really important.

One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen was a sentence made almost entirely of keywords for an island resort. It read something like:

Relax under the blue sky whilst you enjoy your luxurious holiday accommodations. Feel the tensions begin to melt away on the ferry trip through the picturesque islands and world-famous tourist destinations.

Well, in truth it was written better than that, but you get the idea. Nothing wasted and keyword heavy.

Write a list of keywords for your site - brainstorming style. For example, our site's list would start something like this: website, simple, cost-effective, cheap, quality, hosting, search engine, photography, proof reading, business analysis, copy writing, spam filtered email, updates, support, database, dynamic, fair, design, website design.  Keep in mind that generic terms like "website", "cars", "window" will have extremely high levels of competition, so try to differentiate yourself if you can - e.g. a keyword you might choose is "Sydney Websites" or "Dirty Windows".  Note: a keyword is not a really "word" (singular) but also encompasses SMALL phrases.

We begin with keywords because:

  1. Your copy will be generated around them
  2. They will help to focus what you write
  3. They will help to make sure that you don't miss anything
  4. Later on it will tie in with search engine optimisation
