Now that we have keywords and a jumble of sentences it is time to think about some overall categories.  Your categories may have subcategories, so you might opt for sub-menus. Or you might not have enough information to fill up a page with a category, so you might have two or even three categories on one page.

The main idea of sorting out your categories is to decide:

  • What menus to have on your website
  • Identify sub-menus
  • When to have sub-menus and when to have a few related items on the one page

It is worth noting here that some categories are pretty standard.

  • "About us": (or "What we do", "Who we are" etc.)
  • "Contact us": although email is really prevalent, a contact form on a website is still popular
  • "Home": the main sales punch - the first thing people see

Sometimes you can combine these bits of information, but generally speaking these basic items are expected particularly if you are running a business. Even companies that don't want you to ring them will have these categories buried away somewhere if you look hard enough.

Try to limit the amount of main categories to as few as you can. With the standard categories, you're already down three. If you're pushed for main categories (menu items) then you can make "About Us" have subcategories (sub-menus) "Location", "Contact" etc.. Generally once you go over five main categories your website begins to leave "KISS" land (keep it simple, stupid).
